Prototype Compressor Covers

The New Haven Railroad ordered its Alco HH-660 locomotives with compressor covers that were larger and had a slope instead of the standard rectangular compressor cover.

David Hutchinson sent me these photos to use as a guide when designing the compressor covers.

Model Compressor Covers

I originally designed compressor covers as a three piece model for printing at Shapeways. This was so each part could be oriented with the visible sides face up to maximize the detail that Shapeways could print. There were still some striations on the surfaces that were supposed to be smooth. The striations could be filled with a number of coats of a filling primer with some loss of detail.

When resin printers came down in price enough I purchased an Elegoo Saturn in 2021. Now I can design items to be printed as a single piece without the striations in the Shapeways prints. Below is the one piece resin printed compressor cover after priming with thin coats of Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. The surfaces are much smoother than the Shapeways printed three piece compressor cover. Plus there is no assembly required.

The louvers still need to be added. I originally specified 14″ louvers included in the Archer HO Louver Assortment, part AR88056. Use four louvers on the upper part and eight louvers on the lower part.

I originally did not include the louvers with the compressor covers. After hearing that Archer was closing I purchased a number louver sets so I could include the necessary louvers for any compressor covers purchased. I now include louvers with all resin printed compressor covers.

There may be some shrinkage of the original railing mounting hole when printed. The hole may need to be expanded using a #77 drill bit.
