Prototype

The New Haven Railroad added toolboxes to their Alco DERS-2b (RS-2) and DERS-2c (RS-3) locomotives. The toolboxes were mounted to the bottom of the water tank below the air tank on each side of the locomotive.

There were different toolboxes for each side of the engine.

David Hutchinson sent me some photos from his collection to help design the toolboxes. The photo on the left shows the toolbox on the fireman’s side of the engine. The one on the right show the toolbox on the engineer’s side.

3D Printed Toolboxes

Randy Hammill has a lot of additional information about the RS-2 toolboxes and scratchbuilding them in a blog entry here.

Randy extended the water tank on the Proto 1000 RS-2 and added scratchbuilt toolboxes to the extension. Randy noted that the Kato RS-2 water tank looked like it was more correctly sized and did not need to be extended.

The 3D printed toolboxes have a 90 degree angle for mounting on any water tank. The photos below show them mounted on a Kato RS-2.
